An early start today, up at 6, picked up at 7, and a two and a half hour drive to Ha Long Bay. We sailed with a company by the name of Jade Sails, every single member of their team, from Yen Phung to the crew were just amazing. Thank you all!

The pictures pretty well speak for themselves. Eight hours cruising, with breaks for a cave visit and a bit of kayaking. Great food and drink, and fantastic service. We hooked up with Lukas, a Czech Republic citizen now living in Australia, and a newly married Polish couple, on honeymoon, Tomasz and Mayer. They were great company and we had good conversation about the world, its problems, and many lighter things.

We got back to base at 9 p.m. after negotiating a crazy amount of traffic congestion (it is Hanoi Liberation Day, 70th anniversary), leaving just enough time to pop across the road for a beer, and now it’s time to crash!

By assigning places as World Heritage Sites, UNESCO wants to help preserve them for future generations. Its motivation is that “heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today” and that both cultural and natural heritage are “irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration”.

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We found out today why that is so.
